So, What’s the CHSE™ Exam Like?
Feb 5, 2019
It pays to be mentally prepared for what’s to come on exam day! Here, we outline what you can expect—from format to timing and everything in between.
Offered by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH), the CHSE™ credential was designed to provide formal, professional recognition of one’s specialized knowledge, skills, abilities, and accomplishments in simulation education.
The CHSE exam is offered through ISO-Quality Testing, Inc. (IQT) with certification valid for three years.
The Format and Questions
The computer-based CHSE™ exam features 115 multiple-choice questions, of which only 100 will be counted toward your score; the additional 15 questions are pretest questions used to validate new questions for future exams. Note that you won’t know which questions are counted and which aren’t, so be sure to answer each one as if it’s being counted!

The Exam
On exam day, you’ll need to present the Admission Letter you received when your application was approved. You’ll also be using your User ID and Passcode from the IQT website to log in to the exam. A photo ID with signature is also required, which can come in the form of a valid driver’s license, state-issued ID card, passport, or military ID. Library cards, school IDs, credit cards, ID with signature and no picture, and gym membership IDs are not valid forms of identification.
The Results
You’ll get your score on-site for the CHSE exam as soon as you finish the test and it will also be emailed to you. Your results will be reported to SSH and then verified, after which point (~4 weeks) the USPS will send a verification of the results and notification of the granting of CHSE™ status. Certificates are mailed out on a quarterly basis.
